Transportation from Manizales: the cable car and the terminal

Manizales is built along a ridge, which is why its bus terminal sits at the bottom of the city and its cable car exists to get you back up. The airport is the least dependable part of the system, and the volcano next door decides what the mountain above town is open.

The cable car is how you leave the bus terminal

The Asociación Cable Aéreo Manizales runs the Cámbulos station inside the bus terminal itself, and Line 1 climbs from there to Fundadores in the city centre by way of Betania. The system runs every day from 06:00 to 22:00 at an average speed of 3.8 m/s.

That arrangement is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: in most Colombian cities the cable car is a tourist attraction bolted onto a poor neighbourhood. Here it is the ordinary way to get from an intercity bus to the middle of town, and it is what a taxi is competing against when you land at the terminal with luggage.

Line 2 continues from the same Cámbulos station to the main square of Villamaría, across the river, which makes the terminal an interchange rather than an endpoint. Line 3 was built from Cámbulos towards the Zona Rosa through Fátima, Cable and Universidades, and the operator posted a notice on 27 March 2026 announcing that operations on that line would be suspended. Check before you count on it.

What the operator does not publish is how long any of it takes. There is no journey time on the tariff page, the station pages or the notices, so the 3.8 m/s average speed is the only figure available to work from. Its offices are at the Cámbulos station on Calle 65A with Carrera 42, open Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 16:30, on +57 (606) 891 88 41.

What the city charges in 2026

The Alcaldía de Manizales set every public transport fare for the year in two decrees issued on 31 December 2025, numbers 0639 and 0640, with a uniform increase of 350 COP per ticket and rises between 11.7 and 13.2 per cent. Verified September 2026:

Service20252026
Cable aéreo2,900 COP3,250 COP
Bus, basic service2,650 COP3,000 COP
Bus and buseta, executive service2,900 COP3,250 COP
Microbús3,000 COP3,350 COP

The Alcaldía noted that every one of those rises sits below the 23.7 per cent increase in the national minimum wage for 2026, which is the comparison it chose to publish.

The cable and the executive bus cost exactly the same, which removes the usual reason to prefer the bus. Given that Line 1 lands you at Fundadores in the centre, the cable is normally the better of the two from the terminal.

The airport surcharge Manizales does publish

Taxi fares come from a separate decree the same day, number 0641. The 2026 figures are a 3,700 COP flagfall and a 6,300 COP minimum fare, plus an airport surcharge of 4,700 COP that the Alcaldía left unchanged from the previous year.

That surcharge is worth pausing on, because it is rare. Manizales publishes what a taxi may add for an airport run. Medellín publishes a fixed fare to its airport but not from it, and Rionegro, where that airport actually sits, publishes no airport figure at all, as the guide to José María Córdova sets out. A city a fifth of Medellín’s size is clearer about its airport taxi than Medellín is.

La Nubia loses an airline and gets a route back

La Nubia is a short-runway airport hemmed in by the city, which is why it is served by turboprops and why its schedule has thinned. Avianca, which once ran up to five daily flights here, no longer operates from it.

The direction changed in 2026. Inficaldas, the departmental institute that holds the airport, said on 1 August 2026 that the airline Clic would restart a direct Manizales to Medellín link on 16 September 2026, with three weekly frequencies on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The published itinerary leaves Olaya Herrera in Medellín at 6:40 in the morning and returns from La Nubia at about 7:40. Inficaldas framed the service as conditional: whether it stays depends on how many people use it.

Note which Medellín airport that is. The flight uses Olaya Herrera, inside the city, not José María Córdova out at Rionegro, so a connection onto an international flight means crossing Medellín on the ground.

Neither Aerocivil nor the airport’s owner publishes the runway length on a page reachable from here, and the figures that circulate elsewhere disagree with each other, so this guide does not state one. What is verifiable is the consequence: jets do not operate here, and cloud on the ridge is the standing reason flights divert.

The airport being built to replace it

Aerocafé, in Palestina, is the answer Caldas has been building towards for decades. As of September 2026 Aerocivil publishes two live tenders for it on the national procurement platform, SECOP II: construction of the runway for Stage I at 639,583 million COP, and comprehensive project oversight at 20,579 million COP. Both appear as open processes rather than completed works.

What that page does not publish is an opening date, an execution term or a runway length. That silence matters, because Aerocafé has been announced as imminent more than once across five decades. Treat any date you read for it as a projection rather than a commitment, and plan the trips you are taking this year around La Nubia and Pereira.

The volcano sets the rules for the mountain

Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados covers 61,388.24 hectares across Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda and Tolima, was declared on 30 April 1974, and Parques Nacionales lists its current state as open.

Access is conditional in two ways at once. The Servicio Geológico Colombiano has held the Nevado del Ruiz at yellow alert, meaning an active volcano with changes, through its 2026 weekly bulletins; the bulletin covering 28 July to 3 August 2026 records that no ash emission had been registered since 8 March 2026. Alert level can move at short notice, and it governs whether the northern sector opens at all.

The second restriction is vehicular. For the Brisas and Valle de las Tumbas attraction, the Secretaría de Tránsito y Transporte del Tolima issued Resolution 1815 on 24 July 2026 setting an environmental pico y placa on the Manizales to Murillo road, applying on weekends and public holiday bridges with a restriction window from 5:00 to 16:00. Which plates may circulate rotates, so the schedule has to be checked for the specific weekend rather than assumed.

The practical reading: this is a park you enter on a weekday, in a vehicle whose plate you have checked, after reading the current bulletin.

Arriving from Medellín, Bogotá and Pereira

Manizales is served from Medellín’s Terminal del Sur, not the Terminal del Norte, which is the same split described in the guide to transportation from Medellín. Terminales Medellín lists Manizales among the southern terminal’s 56 destinations, and one of the companies working that corridor, Flota Ospina, publishes its Medellín to Pereira fare at 70,000 COP while leaving its Manizales fare unspecified on the same page. No company on that route publishes a journey time.

Pereira is the practical air alternative when La Nubia is closed or has no flight, and its Matecaña airport is the nearest one with a full jet schedule. The road connection from there is short by Colombian standards and the two cities are linked by frequent intercity buses.

Details of each approach are in the guides to Medellín to Manizales, Bogotá to Manizales and transportation from Pereira. The short hop across the river to Villamaría is also Line 2 of the cable.

How do I get from the Manizales bus terminal to the city centre

Take Line 1 of the cable car from the Cámbulos station, which is inside the terminal, to Fundadores in the centre by way of Betania. The fare is 3,250 COP in 2026 and the system runs every day from 06:00 to 22:00.

How much does the cable car cost in Manizales

3,250 COP, set by the Alcaldía de Manizales in decrees 0639 and 0640 of 31 December 2025, up from 2,900 COP. That is the same as an executive bus and 250 COP more than a basic one.

Is there a taxi surcharge for the airport in Manizales

Yes. Decree 0641 of 31 December 2025 sets an airport surcharge of 4,700 COP, on top of a 3,700 COP flagfall and a 6,300 COP minimum fare. The surcharge did not rise for 2026.

Which airlines fly to Manizales

Avianca no longer operates at La Nubia. Inficaldas announced on 1 August 2026 that Clic would restart a Medellín link on 16 September 2026, three times a week from Olaya Herrera, not from José María Córdova.

Can I visit the Nevado del Ruiz

Parques Nacionales lists Los Nevados as open, but the Servicio Geológico Colombiano holds the volcano at yellow alert and the road to the northern sector carries an environmental pico y placa on weekends and holiday bridges from 5:00 to 16:00, under Tolima resolution 1815 of 24 July 2026.

Is the third cable car line running

The operator posted a notice on 27 March 2026 announcing the suspension of operations on Line 3, which runs from Cámbulos to Fátima, Cable and Universidades. Confirm before planning around it.

The rest of the coffee region, including Pereira, Armenia and Salento, is collected in the the coffee region guides.

About Voytara

Voytara publishes informational guides on how transportation works across Colombia, using figures taken from the operators and authorities that publish them. Every figure on this page was read from its issuer in September 2026 and is named with the body that published it. Where an issuer publishes nothing, this guide says so instead of estimating. Voytara does not sell transport services or operate tours.
